Heather M. Mitchell is an associate attorney at Maceau Law. Her experienced, and traveled background allows her to approach each case and client with compassion and attention to detail.

She is a former Public Defender, Federal Public Defender and Chief Judge at Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and is licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado, United States District Court for the District of North Dakota, and in the State of Florida. As a Public Defender in adult misdemeanors, Ms. Mitchell handled an average of 200 cases at a time, and over 100 cases at a time in felony adult division. She litigated over 35 jury trials in two years. Over her Federal Public Defender career, Ms. Mitchell handled over 750 cases in and out of the courtroom including, but not limited to, drug trafficking, bank robbery, murder, counterfeiting, and a variety of immigration cases.

As Chief Judge of Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Ms. Mitchell presided over criminal court and child custody cases, and started an alternative drug court while ensuring all tribal courts were conducted in compliance with Tribal Law and traditions.

Ms. Mitchell is currently litigating civil rights actions, defending federal criminal cases, and handling immigration cases with Maceau Law.

Ms. Mitchell received her Juris Doctor from Emory Law School in Atlanta after traveling the world with American Airlines. She has been to over 40 countries and was active with Airline Ambassadors, a charity organization where airline personnel use their flight benefits to deliver humanitarian aid to children in the third world, and to escort children to the United States for life changing medical care.

Having lived in Cancun, Mexico, she is conversational in Spanish. She volunteers to do pro bono prisoner rights cases through the Federal District Court, enjoys Colorado’s amazing outdoors (fishing, hiking, camping) with her two fur-babies, bakes addictive desserts, subscribes to the NFL Sunday Ticket, frequently dons Ohio sports teams’ attire (which may be half of her wardrobe) and has no problem getting caught in the rain.
